It's Time!

A 60-Year Love Story that Began in Uganda

George & Agnes Kalule-Kiganda, Entebbe, Uganda

November 19, 1966

Their Love Story...

CHAPTER 1

The Beginning

George and Agnes started out as co-workers who became friends at the Entebbe Printing Department in Uganda. Six months of courtship later, they were married. George planned the whole wedding (which was customary at that time) and Agnes showed up as the beautiful bride. A friend of the newly married couple wasn't about to let the day pass without some excitement — he rounded up others on the spot to form a motorcycle entourage from the church to the reception hall.

CHAPTER 2

Building a Life

George worked his way up through the ranks of government until an opportunity in Uganda's Ministry of Foreign Affairs led to a diplomatic appointment in Washington, DC. That move changed everything for the couple who by that time had five children. For Agnes, it meant leaving behind a successful bridal shop business at Abayita Ababiri (a neighborhood in Wakiso District, Central Uganda), to raise a growing family in a country that was completely new to them. The cold alone was an adjustment — this was a family used to the warmth of the Pearl of Africa, Uganda’s nickname. New friends in the U.S. helped them find their footing. They figured it out, together with their Catholic faith as a strong guiding force and a foundation in their relationship and in their family.

CHAPTER 3

Their Family Legacy

Sixty years later, George and Agnes have been blessed with 7 children, 13 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. When you look at this family, you can trace exactly where the gifts came from. Some followed George's path into civil service. Many followed Agnes into entrepreneurship and administration. There's a grandchild serving in the armed forces, athletes who have earned medals and titles in basketball, gymnastics, and track and field, gifted cooks, and singers and dancers throughout the family — just like the patriarch and matriarch who started it all.

60 years is a milestone most people never reach — which is why, when Christine shared her parents’ story on TikTok, the response was overwhelming. Here’s a glimpse of what moved so many strangers to stop and celebrate, and some of their responses to the post.

That's an amazing accomplishment!!! What a lovely way to grow up, right?!?! Believe it or not, I have you beat! My folks celebrated 74 years in September. It is possible they will get to 75. Married at 16. Currently 90 and almost 91. Still living in their own home doing it (mostly) on their own. 🖤🖤❤️❤️ My brother and I help but they don't need much. Congratulations to you all! May they see many more!
